Help! Network Setup Wiz unable to complete setup

  Tj_El 21:10 13 Jun 03

When I run the network setup wizard on my XP Home PC in order to start the network for the XP Pro PC in the other room, I get the message that the wizard was unable to complete the operation. It then says to run it again or setup manually.

What could be causing this?

Thanks a mill.

A repair of Windows XP resolves this.

how pray tell...?

Are you running as an administrator, or user? User accounts cannot create networks.

Check in Device Manager that your network cards are not showing any errors.

Alternatively, click here and setup manually - it's quite straightforward.

Now each PC can ping the other but my internet connection goes through the stages of "detecting proxy settings" and then (I think) when it finds this, "connecting to" and it's at this point that I get the message: "The page cannot be displayed".

On the XP Pro PC, I can see my BT OPenworld connection in the "Network Connections" folder as well as the icon in the task bar. So I am a bit surprised that it fails to connect to the Net. I can't ping or any other site in the command window.

The XP Pro IPCONFIG command results in the following:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Tjel>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Any suggestions would be useful....

Do you have any firewalls running (including the built-in MS one)?

If so, try disabling, then re-connecting.

Both PCs should have the same Workgroup name, nut different Computer names.

Both should have the same subnet mask (, but unique IP addresses (192.168.0.x).

No - no firewalls. Had ZoneAlarm on the XP Home PC but uninstalled it. No built-in firewalls active - all disabled.

Same workgroup, different computer names, unique IP addresses...

Still no go... :-(

Just in case, do a complete, manual uninstall of Zonealarm - click here

I have seen many instances where ZA was supposedly uninstalled. In fact, significant parts of the program remained, entirely blocking comms.

BTW, if ZA is the culprit, then the Network Wizard will probably run without a hitch :)

My idea was overreactive but in the worst you may have to do.

But follow the above and post back if you need more help.

The reason why I want to connect is not only to share the internet connection but also to update the XP Pro system...

The error has to do with DNS. Is it a case of incorrect LAN settings for the internet connection and if so what should my LAN settings be?

Automatically detect settings?
Use automatic configuration script?

This is supposed to be easy to setup - I can't figure out why it's being such a pain...!
