Help needed - PC crash - Registry Cannot Load

Hi,

I've booted up my PC today after a year of trouble free running and have been confronted with the following blue screen and the following message:

"The registry cannot load the hive(file):\systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or alternate"

I am running XP Home on an AMD XP1900 PC.

Several questions.

Can I fix this and how?

Do I need to reformat my C: and reinstall Win Xp Home and if so what is the procedure?

What could have caused this drastic and sudden failure?

Thanks,

Evolution

If the Last Known Good Configuration option fails try the Recovery Console.

This is a laymans version of Q307545 in simple language.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
