Help with my home networking

help me i got a problem! i have a desktop pc and a laptop! i want to set it up so i can access my files and printers on my desktop from my laptop! so if i work on my desktop i then dont have to then go and put it onto disk to finish it on my laptop! i have a D-Link Network adapter with a D-Link network card for my laptop! but i do not know how to configure my PC's so they share files and connect to each other! Please help me i will be very grateful!

If you are connecting the two PCs directly, it is essential that you use a "crossover" ethernet cable. The specifics of how you configure everything depend on the version(s) of Windows you are using and whether or not you need to use "Internet Connection Sharing" in your network.
