Can anyone tell me what happening...my email in box is filling up with rejected mail from all kinds of places. Seems that someone or something is using my e address for spaming by attaching a name or number to the front of the address...most seem to be porn related mailings. Can anyone suggest what I can do about this.

Not much you can do.

Delete the mail or start a new mail address...

It'll stop after a while.

Contact the compnay who owns the mailbox (Hotmail, Yahoo, Blueyonder etc) and tell them whats happened...

If the address is different from your actual e-mail address, you could set up a filter that removes any mails that do not have the EXACT wording of your address.

Thanks to those that supplied info but the issue goes on...daily I get a stack of emails from automated postmaster programmes for blue yonder, lycos etc advising they are returning undeliverable mail. The mail seems to be porn type stuff but only short typo messages. The mail is returned as though sent by me, it carries my e address but was not originated by me. I have contacted my ISP who seem pretty useless in any real advice...they have suggested the worm Krex (32) or (A)another virus. Triple checked my machine and its clean. So I still need an answer. Can the perpetrators use my e address for any other business. Can I be tared by their brush?

Anyone could use your adddress as the return address for any e-mails and sadly it may well affect you in the long run. Push the ISP for an answer.

Other than that use software like Popcorn click here to remove this rubbish from you mail box before downloading the legit mail.

Get a new email address and mail all your contacts asap. If you do not have Klez (it does sound like klez) then this is the only way out.

To expand GANDALF <|:-)>'s posting further i would suggest as GANDALF <|:-)> says. Get a temp Hotmail account. Monitor the BY account as after a few days / weeks they might stop using that account name and you should be able to go back to normal after a while. Use Popcorn or the BY Web based service click here to monitor / clear the account.

Bear in mind that it might not be your PC that has the virus, it could be someone else and the virus is picking up your email address from their address book and inserting it into the "From" field.

I had a similar case to yours and was starting to become paranoid as my machine was also showing clear. I then had a phone call from a friend saying their PC was showing a virus (which in fact if I remember was Klez) , I removed it from their machine and suddenly my returned mails stopped...coincidence?? Naturally, my email address was in their address book.

Good point - forgot about that possibility...

I work for the Government and we know (as do you all) that spam organisers highjack the average person's e-mail account to do the eveil bidding. Unlike the paper's say, it is done on a much smaller scale, let's say, they will have you account passing on about 10-100 e-mails a day. As they do this with thousands upon thousands of accounts, you can see how the spam builds up to a phemonenal amount of potential people out there.

Fact is, if this appears what is hapening to you, then you ISP or your e-mail provider will be most happy to help you erradicate this problem.

Yours Truly,
Kevin, Swansea.

Note...as suggested by on contributor, the problem will work itself out and that is whatappears to have happened...it has taken three weeks to subside. For further interest VISP Freeserve nor their providor,Energis, seemed at all interested in giving answers other than their pre prepared statements which simply did not apply to my e condition nor did they answer any specific questions. I was more than a little dissapointed. As usual the only source of info was you lot...thanks again.
