HELP Laptop boot problems!

The battery ran out on my Viao last night while I was working on it. I plugged external power on and found that it would not start up. It tries to but then comes up with a blue screen message saying

“A problem has been detected. Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer – UNMOUNTABLE-BOOT-VOLUME…..…”

It suggests trying safe mode but none of the various options work, all bringing me back to the blue screen

I have tried booting from my Windows XP Professional disc and this starts to reinstall XP but I stopped when I got to the warning that proceeding with the partitioning would wipe all the data from the hard drive.

I do need to access the data on the laptop.

Any ideas?
