HELP! I've got the "java/byteverify" virus!

AVG virus scan has picked up a file called "counter.class" which has the "java/byteverify" virus in it!

I managed to find out a bit about it on the net and was told that the program "CWShredder" would rid my PC of the virus...but it hasnt!

AVG still picks it up every time :(

How can I get this thing off my PC?!

Please help!

Have you got ME or XP if so it will be sitting in system restore and you will have to disable this, run AVG again and then re-enable it. You will loose your restore points but you will also loose the virus.

I have XP Pro, I tried what you said but it didnt work? Perhaps I did it wrong?

Run AVG and virus detected but AVG cant heal
Turn off system restore
Run AVG and virus is still detected
Turn on system restore
Run AVG and virus is still detected

Did I do something wrong?

Run AVG and virus detected but AVG cant heal ---> Turn off system restore ---> Run AVG and virus is still detected ---> Turn on system restore ---> Run AVG and virus is still detected

Sorry, hope that makes more sense as to what I tried now!

Any ideas?

Can you post the exact location of the virus.

  Muckleface 19:46 04 Mar 04

C:\Documents and Settings\Jordan\.jpi_cache\jar\1.0

...and then its in a zip file called...

Counters.jar-35c4f3b2-40b61510

...which contains 5 files...

web.exe

Manifest.mf

Gummy.class

Counter.class

Beyond.class

The virus is in the file "Counter.class", does that help? Should I just delete the file which contains the virus?

Go there, right click and delete it.

It will go to the recycle bin which you can then empty.
