help with home network please

I am connecting a laptop to my main pc to share a broadband connection.
My problem is that if i use the 3ft patch ethernet cable from the laptop i get the shared internet access but as soon as I try to use a 10metre ethernet cabel (this being the correct cabel,I have checked)the ip address on the laptop changes to a 169 ip address which we all know won't work.
Do i need a booster or something to use this length of cabel....i have been told maybe a powered ethernet hub would do it.
At the moment I am going from laptop to modem/router (u.s robotics)...short cabel works, long cabel won't

You should make sure that the longer cable is also a crossover - I expect it isn`t

There is no other reason why a cable would make any difference, unless it was over 90 metres then you would have intermitent issues.

Good luck
