Help formatting hard drive

How do I completely format a hard drive so all history is completely erased. I want to sell the hard drive but I don't want anything to be found on it (private documents etc) Also can it be formatted without having to put an OS on it.

Yes you can format it without putting an OS on it. Have a look at the website of the hard drive manufacturer, many do a download which will format and write to all parts of the disk, it does take a while to run but will make it unrecoverable.

also,if you have a system up and running...put the hard drive in it and right click on it in "my computer". in there, you have the option to format or quick format...if you`re selling it,i would sugest the longer will also check the disc for faults.(hope i made sense!)
