Help with error message re Maxtor One TouchII

  ukfetchfan 18:02 01 Aug 06

Bought this Maxtor One Touch II 200Gb external hard drive about a year ago. It is about half full. All was working well in May. Now everytime I re-boot the computer I get the following error message: Retrospect has encountered a serious error: Assertion Failure at "tbuffer.cpp-373" A log of this error has been written to the file "asset_log.utx".
The Maxtor no longer automatically saves and when I try and manually save anything the message reads: 'Cannot start the operation because the disk to which the files are being copied is not available.'
USB and power connected. Blue light constantly on.
Has anyone any ideas how to fix this? - in easy- speak please!!
