Help connecting a second wireless laptop

I have a wireless laptop connected to my netgear router which is working fine.
My daughter has bought a wireless laptop hoping to share the connection, but I am having trouble getting it to connect.
I have gone through the process of finding my network and typing the ID passphrase but it does not connect.
Has anyone have the correct steps that I should be following.
Thanks

Bit more info: Could you tell me the following...

OS.
Firewall (type and status).
Adapter (type and model).
Method of management (3rd-party software or XP's WZC).
MAC Filtering (yes/no).

Thanks ade.h for the reply.
I have just got a connection by going into my router setup and disabling the mac address filtering.
Thanks again
