Help in buying wireless router

Guys,

I have bought my son an xbox for Christmas and I would like some help setting it up to use xbox live.

I have a broadband connection but the modem I have is a hard wired Thomson speed touch 330, I can't plug the xbox into it for two reasons, one the modem has no spare ports and two the pc is no where near the TV.

Therefore I want to get a wireless modem/router thingy so that I can get the wireless adaptor for the xbox and it will use a wireless connection on my pc.

The problem is I know nothing about this wireless world, can anyone tell me what router/modem I will need to do this, also at some point I will be getting my daughter a laptop for her 6th form work and I would want her laptop to be able to connect to the internet via the wireless router thingy too.

Is it possible to have my pc hard wired to the wireless modem/router and all other devices ie a laptop and xbox using it on the wireless network?

Any help telling me what to buy would be very helpful please.

I have just bought a new PC with Windows Vista. If I leave it overnight in sleep mode, will it still be able to carry out tasks such as backing up and scanning for spyware, or does it have to be fully on for that?

Also, most people are aware that it is difficult to totally delete files from a hard drive, unless you use specialist software, but is it also possible for people to know what websites a person has visited by looking at their hard drive, and could they find out any information that they had typed into a webpage, such as bank details?

Any answers to the above gratefully received.

Yes it is possible and almost any Modem/Router will do the job. If your ISP is say BT, then a BT Homehub would be the way to go - these are about the easiest Modem/Routers to set up.
