HDMI Cable Issue with Toshiba Laptop to Sharp flatscreen TV

I have brought a HDMI Cable to connect my laptop to my TV but it is not working for some reason.

My laptop is Toshiba Satellite M50-A-11P and my TV is a 22in sharp brand LC-22DV200E.

I have tried to change the setting on my laptop to project to two monitors and I have change on the TV menu to HDMI.

As I missing something or is my TV not compatible?

If you boot the laptop with it connected to the TV do you get anything?

Does the HDMI port need enabling, either in BIOS or through control panel?

I have tried to reboot the laptop with the cable attached and nothing happens apart from the laptop screen becomes narrower on the left and right side of the screen.

When I pull the cable out the screen flashes and reverts back to full screen.

I got my cable from PC world, would the type of HDMI cable make a difference?

No the cable won't make a difference.

With tv set to HDMI - but not connected - do you get a "no signal" message? Does this go away if you plug the cable in.

With laptop on and connected cycle through the options of laptop screen only laptop and external monitor external monitor only

This is done, on my laptop, by pressing FN + F5 keys - allow a few moments after each change.
