HDD's how much alike are they.

I dropped my USB HDD (3.5 inch drive) and am looking to as cheap a repair as possible. The drive has gone. all else is well. The drive is a SATA 3.5 inch. The drive that is in it seems to be nolonger available, but there seem to be plenty of alternatives with the same spec. Prices range from £ 35 to £ 90. Just how compatible with each other are these drives, or must I get an identical model. Not worried about capacity as I don't need as much as I had.
Any advice appreciated ?

They are built to the same connection standard so any 3.5 SATA drive will fit in your external caddy.

Don't worry about a fast drive as it will be limited by the USB connection speed which is far slower than any drive currently on the market

Personal preference for me would be a Seagate or Western digital.
