? HDD Size accurate?

I have put together a PC for the first time despite trouble with the first Graphics card I am now away. On entering the BIOS, it recognises the HDD as a 180 Gb (it is an IBM 180 Gb IDE HDD) but on formatting the disk with XP Pro, and running the system it only recognises thart the HDD is 135 Gb. What have I done wrong? Any ideas?

You need support for 48 bit Addressing to recognise drives larger than 135GB.

At the moment you just have 28 bit addressing which can only recognise the first 135GB of the drives.

Support is in the form of a Driver upgrade.

A BIOS upgrade *maybe* needed.

Go to the website of your hard drive and they hopefully will have the solution.

However i think Windows XP Service Pack fixes this problem so install SP1.

Thnks but will that mean that I have to reinstall Windows XP Pro after the service pack or willit automatically recognise th elarger HDD. Can I install SP 1 from the Microsoft website?

Yes - click here

You can install it now.

I did say i "maybe wrong" so just hang on until spmeone can say yes it will fix your problem. Dont want you to waste a downlaod. (although SP1 comes with alot critical updates)
