What are the effects of replacing a 40GB 5400rpm 512K cache ATA-100 hdd with a 40GB 7200rpm 512K cache ATA-100 hdd in a working pc? Any advantages and/or disadvantages? Please advise. Thanks.

Because of the speed hike, you can expect reads and writes to be quicker, but you could also acheive similar performance improvements with a regular defar of your HD. You might do better getting ATA-133 if your mobo supports it but otherwise, I don't think the uograde is value for money. If, on the other hand, you have to replace your existing drive because of faults then there are no disadvantages but, once again ATA 133 might be a better way forward.

If you're going to replace the drive, why stick at 40GB. You can double this and pay less than £50
