HDD laptop loads on N1015v but not on Armada 1750

I have bought several Compaq Armada 1750 laptops and removed the existing 6GB HDDs and replaced them with larger HDDs (20GB, 30GB and 48GB) I haven't had any problems - I just insert an XP CD and the operating system loads. I have just bought a 40GB HDD and when I inserted it into a 1750 (one which I have used before) it would not load, all I got was just a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner of the screen not even the usual system disk error. The XP disk begins to spin but then nothing happens. As the HDD was described as "in perfect working order" I tried it in a Compaq N1015v and to my surprise, it loaded XP straight away, no problems, can anyone offer an explanation please?

Hi Woodchip, thanks for that, you may well be right, checking back I've only used IBM and Fujitsu HDDs before - just seems strange that one Compaq l/top will accept the drive but another Compaq l/top won't.
