HDD going crazy

Hiya all

If I leave my system "idle" (doing nothing) for a period of time it would seem Windows XP Pro is doing a task in the background as it starts up my hdd and it goes crazy. It can last up to anything around 10 minutes. If I try and do CTRL ALT Delete or even just move the mouse it stops.

Can anyone tell me what is happening??

fanx in advance
