This is an old chestnut. I have 20gig HDD that i need to format. I will probably be installing win xp some time. Do i need to make a boot disc or can i just format the HDD from the dos prompt.

Well the best way is to download a Win98SE bootdisk from click here

This will give you the option to Fdisk, Partition and Format the disk.

boot up from it and it will offer you option to format

If you do use the boot disk method, don't forget to run the format command from the A:\ prompt as you're deleting the operating system from the c: partition and it'll just grind to a halt part way through. Also, when booting up with the floppy, if you hold down the shift key until you get the display, 'Windows is Bypassing Your Startup Files' or some such thing, then this makes life easier.
