Are you trying to format from within windows?

  donatello 10:33 12 Nov 05

yes from the command prompt .

You'll need to reboot and use a boot disk to format and re-install windows, it won't allow you to format from within windows.

I'm sure another member can point you in the right direction with a link to instructions.

If you are planning to reinstall Windows XP then follow click here to partition and format during the reinstallation.

Make sure before you reformat and reinstall, that all your data, documents, pictures and vids (what have you) is backed up. Also make sure you have all your driver cd's and licenses to hand.
