HDD Failing - Norton Ghost

My HDD is failing fast - an office machine containing a lot of specialist software/configurations (ie it is our broadband ICS gateway and holds encryption software for transmission of documents to the Inland Revenue, etc).

It is essential that any downtime at the moment is minimal.

I understand that Norton Ghost (just ordered for delivery tomorrow)will create an image of my current hard disk and I can transfer to a new HDD (already on hand).

Any tips or advice for a first time user of the prog?

You will be making an image file, which has to be stored somewhere.

As long as your new HDD has more than one partition, it should be plain sailing.

No use putting the image on what will be the new c: drive because "restoring the image" will overwrite everything on the target drive!

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but this is the only snag you might otherwise have met.

Thanks Diemmess

This was just the type of help I was looking for! Nothing is "too obvious" - it is usually these thing that trip me up.

Likewise, I assume I could put the image on the existing drive and restore to the new (single partitioned) drive and then make it the master.

Yes - assuming you expect the old HD to last a little longer!

I plodded my own way through "how to use Ghost" but you won't regret buying it.

The image is some incomprehensible file, but I discovered by RTFM that you can restore any chosen individual file as needed by using the Ghost Explorer. In my case it was a discarded but suddenly needed font.

Thanks for your advice Diemmess

Fingers crossed for my HDD to last just a few hours longer!
