Is this HD dead ?

Problem boots up and then freezes on "verifing dmi pool data" stops dead tryied removeing memory and rebooting same thing happens tried booting in safe mode stops dead after testing Hymen thingy wont go no further ran scandisk said there was a problen and it couldnt read so it moved c:windows directory to another area and said it would mark area as failed now nothing works, windows nothin so i formated and fdisked and it found loads of errors in different areas and tried to reclaim bad sectors.Could i fdisk and set the amount of area of disk to use as say fifty persent of drive bypassing bad bits or would it just make a mess.

Ok Powerless thx for the bad news lol i had a feeling it was caput but thought i might get away with salvageing 50% of drive aw well lol.

Search here, it keeps coming up & is a setting problem I think not the HDD

You didn't say OS or HDD size. Attemting to format format above the 64GB with W98 gives problems. Download free Ranish click here Run it & type A to make a boot floppy, then set & format. However if the MB doesn't allow the size it will give the results you're experiencing. MB sizes tend to be 2GB, 8GB, 32GB & 64GB

Os is wim 98se and hd size is 30 gig cant see what settings would make any difference to it tho lol.

It will not harm it to say split your disk in two with fdisk, if it will do it?

Also if it does or doesn't partition the hard drive, run scandisk thorough in dos. It may take a very long time as you have bad sectors and other problems.

If it sticks on an allocation unit, give it time to try and recover it. Any bad sectors found should be marked as unwritable by windows and these should be ignored when writing new files.

Worth a try before you decide to chuck it.
