having trouble formatting hard drive

it keeps saying some programs are in use even though ive ended everything, the one time it did work nothing happened.
im running windows me

ok it sounds like you are trying to format while windows

1st off you will need to get a boot disk ttp://click here
2nd set your machine to boot from the floppy in the bios
3rd make sure you have backed up anything you want to keep make sure you have all nescacery disks Ie Windows ME full install
turn your pc off insert floppy reboot machine
at the A:\prompt type format C:\ (note space between format and C:\
WARNING ALL DATA WILL BE ERASED FROM THE FIXED DISK

You cannot format the drive the op system is on, from the op system.

To format your C:\drive and reinstall windows boot from the windows boot (rescue) floppy disc. select with CD rom support at the a:\ prompt tpye format c:
then run E:\setup from the CD (remember the loaded tools push the CD letter back D:\ becomes E:\)
