Hard Drives- What is what?

Hi Gang, I am about to add an extra drive to my machine but all these letters are confusing as to the correct choice, IDE, ATA etc. All I know is that my PC has a SATA dard drive, any help is as always welcome and thanks in advance.

IDE, ATA, PATA, UDMA are basically all the same, different names for the same thing. They connect to the motherboard using an IDE connection and the old flat ribbon cable. SATA (Serial ATA) is the new faster connection. If your computer is already using a SATA drive, then that's the one to go for, chances are you'll have a connection on the motherboard to connect it to.
