hard drives not booting

Hi guys,

PC 1200MHz, Win Me, 1 HDD of 30Gb, 1 DVD & 1 Floppy drive installed. basic setup.

Major puzzling problem here. Here's the lowdown:

1. PC connected to net all day every day (no firewall or I-Net security installed - don't ask!)
2. recently crashed. when turned back on, comp checks RAM which is all good.
3. Then checks IDE's etc. primary master 30Gb drive is recognised as is DVD.
4. On same screen, msg appears = "Primary master drive fails...F1 to continue, DEL setup.
5. I hit DEL, drive not recognised in BIOS, thanks i say and exit
6. Try again, F1 this time, now receiving this msg - "ultra100 bios not installed because there are no drives attached"
7. Then a msg = "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". thanks again.

tried drive in PC that works, not recognised.
tried drive from another computer with Me OS, not recognised.
originally thought HDD error but as a perfectly healthy drive from another PC doesn't work, i've ruled this out.
replaced system battery incase of CMOS corruption (?), no luck
cables are all connected correctly.

stuck for ideas

hope you can help
ta, chris
