hard drive--volume label

does anyone know how you can change the volume label on a hard drive so you can use it ?
i need to format mine but cant type in the volume label that windows has assigned it ?
i think it was formating when there was a power cut so now cant format it!

Hi Brocky46

Don't know if this will help, but if you need to reformat, you could boot up with a Win98 start up disk and use it to fdisk/format your hard drive. I'm sure that during this process you are given the option to provide a volume label.

You could try running

fdisk /mbr

this may reset the volume label (but I'm not certain)

or failing this, you could do a "zero-fill" which returns the drive to the state it left the factory. Eack drive manufacturer has their own zero-fill program (you'll find it on their site).
