I have a 1Tb 2.5 inch hdd rescued from a failed laptop and is now in a caddy. Just wondered if it's ok to use this drive to record from TV through a USB port, or do drives used for this purpose need to be powered.

Grateful for any help.

Hi,

I have a Sony W700B series TV.

I put an old HDD in a caddy and simply plugged it into one of the TV's USB sockets. Works a treat. Powered from the USB socket too, so no external PSU required. It only records what the TV is tuned to, although you can watch other AV inputs while recording. Set-up was easy, I just followed the on-screen prompts.

Plug it in and see what happens!

Should work, only 3.5 inch drive require and external power source.

Depends if TV will recognise the drive it may need formatting.
