Hard Drive Recovery - Boot

I need a bootable disc image to recover files off a hard drive in a friends computer. The computer wont start windows but if i can recover their files than its a great help to them. I have tried a download from NTFS.com and that makes .dim images. If anyone knows how to open these .dim files then please help, if not are there any other programs/boot discs that i can use.

Thanks in advance

Can you remove the HDD and connect to another PC using a caddy so it becomes an external drive?.
You might be able to access the files.

I followed this and made a boot USB flash card in under an hour.

I don't recommend Linux Distros because I want to convert you. I am a happy MS Windows user.

But it does allow access to the HDD without "You do not have permission", "Access Denied" etc etc

Thanks for the advice,

I am going to put ubuntu (ergghh!!!) on a cd and use it as a live cd to copy the files from the ntfs drive to a fat32 drive.

Thanks @robinofloxley and dont worry, i am sticking with windows.
