hi all,
i bought a laptop in a second hand store for €100
it has a recovery disc, when i got it cleaned up
i went to boot it up and this is the message i got on screen

"windows could not start because the following
file is missing,or corrupt
windows root>\system32\hal,dll
please reinstall a copy of the file"

so i put in the recovery disc, it began to run and then i got a dialogue box that said

"partitions are not matched
cannot find preload tag for setboot ini"

now, i have no idea what is going on, so i would very much appreciate any help you could give,
i only bought it for it's memory and dvd writer. ger

Someone has wiped the partitions on the hard drive and formatted it.

This is the worst thing you can do with a laptop with a recovery partition.

If it has a microsoft license sticker attached, you could try a borrowed copy of windows to install the operating system. Just use the license code on the laptop and not the one of the borrowed disk.

thank you ed-0,i took your advise and installed a system, from a disc i borrowed it booted up, and got as far as the windows screen, the it would go no further, so i quess who ever had the computer last, really done a job on the hard disc. once again thank you for taking the time to answer, much appreciated.ger
