hard drive problem

we have a acer aspire running windows xp home with 80 gb partitioned hard drive c&d. the total disk space used is at the most 6gb on c drive yet in properties it tells us that the space used is 28 gb.why is it giving us a wrong reading can enybody help solve our problem?

All I can think of is that a significant proportion of disk space is given over to system restore - these files are usually hidden.

Also, if there is a recovery partition on the disk, that is likely to be hidden also.

Yep have same laptop.Diodorus siculus is right,its the hidden files using up extra space

Open my computer and right click the "C" drive. Pick properties. What is the used space and what is the free space?

Go Control Panel, Admin. Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management.
