Hard Drive Light Continuously Flashing

The Hard Drive light on my tower case started flashing rapidly and the only way to switch off the computer was at the mains. Then it didn't come on at all, so I replaced the PSU, which is brand new and works fine in another computer.

But as soon as I plug it in, the hard drive light flashes non-stop rapidly. The power switch on the tower case has no effect, so I can only switch it off at the mains. Neither the CD nor the floppy drives work, though they work in a different computer.

What could be wrong? Was there a short on the motherboard which has caused all this?

but this has the sound of a motherboard fault.

Presumably, when you installed the new PSU you checked the state of all the motherboard connectors - the ribbon cables power connections to your drives?

Do the fans run normally?

Do you get a signal on the monitor?

Yes, it sounds like a motherboard fault to me too.

All the connnectors are definitely in their correct places and in firmly.

The only fan that runs is the one on the PSU and the one over the processor - there are no other fans installed. What also bothers me is that there is no "normal" single beep at startup either.

There's nothing on the monitor - it won't come out of standby.
