Hard Drive Freezes

  Newuser1445 23:48 21 Feb 04

When running certain programs my hard drive which is partitioned into C,D & E drives hangs and makes a cycling sound. I have tried a surface scan on C which indicates a bad sector at approx 56,300 clusters. The suface scan then stops again with the same sound.

Is this the portent of a dying hard drive or will a defrag or reformat of drive C resolve matters?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You could try the HDD mfg website for their hdd tools.Maxtor offers PowerMax which "low level" formats the hdd,and can supposedly cure dodgy sectors which the OS has previously "marked" as unusable.
