Is hard drive failing?

  twed 14:31 09 Oct 03

Got a 4 year old Gateway PC (now my son's) hard drive making terrible noises that I can only describe as a mechanical 'spring' type boing noise! Sometimes switch on and it cannot find operating system, sometimes it's ok. Is this a dead cert that hard drive is failing and should I remove and put another in or try something else first? Any help much appreciated. Sally

It sounds like it is on it's way out...however I take it you have did all the scandisk & defrag checks...or went through the various repair options that windows offers?

Bad sectors can be blocked off and normal service resumed, although a thorough disc check needs to be done.
