Hard Drive Error?

I always use Norton Speed Disk (2003 ver) to defrag my drive and normally everything seems to work great. Recently though I uninstalled a few programs as my drive was getting full and naturally I wanted to defrag the drive. However I now have a problem where speed disk falters and my hard drive is constantly making what can only be described as a scratching noise. If I stop the program it stops. The only other thing I have done on my PC recently was turn on the indexing service in the 'Search' dialog of XP and I've since turned it off again to see if this was the cause, it hasn't helped. If anyone has any ideas on how to slove this they'd be much appreciated, cheers.

First run Windows Scandisk, with the "Thorough" setting.

You can also try a disk disgnostic, such as Seatools (see downloads section) - and see waht they both tell you.
