Start, run, type:

Right click Disk1, choose Initialise.

Right click the black line next to Disk1 and choose New Partition and follow the wizard.

As the Drive is 160GB you will need SP1 for XP to recognise its size correctly.

For the drive to be seen in My computer a partiton has to be created but not necessarily formatted.

Right click "My Computer" Icon choose manage/disk management. Right click on your new drive in right-hand pane of the window that opens. Choose partition, partition as you wish or select the whole drive then format. It will take around 1 hour to format but is then ready for use and will show in "My Computer"

If you feel that the drive will have no bad sectors because it's new, choose quick format and it will be done in about 30 seconds. j.
