My hard drive won't even boot past the initial set up screen. i cant even get into the boot settings to change them so that i can run the windows xp disc to repair or format the HD.

My bro said that when he was using the computer it froze for ages so he manually restarted it.

is it fubar or can it still be used somehow?

switch off
Unplug HDD
enter BIOS and change Boot device to CD drive
save settings
refit HDD and attempt to reboot with XP CD

did that and it booted from cd but after saying that it was checking hardware configurations it just went blank and stayed like that.

I've just been playing with a suspect HDD and yes the PC will hang for quite a while it is attempting to configure the device.

If the drive is completely knackered then replace it now you can boot from DVD drive you can install windows on a new drive.
