Quite often, I can hear the hard drive rattling away. No processess are showing as using CPU, no scans are taking place. What can it be?

If Vista it could well be search indexer.

Thanks, indexer is already off.

Again if using Vista the Reliability and Performance Monitor will show disc activity and which processes are writing to and reading from the disc.

Thanks, I'll keep that open for when it starts again.

I'm alright now. And so am I.

If you're using AVAST it could be generating VRDB while PC is idle.

No Avast on here.

Possibly a similar type of program that only runs when system is idle? Glad to know you're both alright now LoL.

Looking at the Reliability and Performance Monitor, I would like to set it to monitor the hard drive and tell me what it's doing and why.

It looks complicated, I've looked at the Help files and can't figure it out. Does any one have a simple guide? Or can take on the challange?
