i have a HDD 40 Gb 6 years old. suddenly my computer stoped detecting hard disk. i have installed a new HDD but old one is still not detecting. how to take the backup?

If the disc does not show in BIOS then its either Bad disc or Ribbon Cable One you can Repair the cable with a New One. If the disc shows in BIOS you may be able to do something with it. If you connected the Drive to same cable as new one Have you changed the Jumper on the back edge of the Drive to SLAVE

A lesson to be learned the hard way I'm afraid.

You take backups whilst the drive is working - not after it's failed.
