Half a Reset?

What could cause a system to partially reset itself to defaults?

I was working away in Chrome this morning when it crashed, and when it restarted it was just like brand new download - all my settings had gone, my bookmarks, extensions, everything.

The same applied to many of the system settings set in Control Panel - font size, colours, themes, and so on.

Firefox and Opera still operating exactly as I set them up, so what causes this partial reset?

Google forums seem to think that you may have become logged out. Suggest logging out then back in.

Don't think it's that, as I can read my mail, and alter the size of fonts, both of which require you to log in, mail into Google and fonts into system.
