Graphics Cards for Sony Vaio laptop

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with a decent ATI Rage Mobility Graphics card but it only has 8MB RAM. I would like to upgrade the graphics card but there seems to be little information from Sony or elsewhere on the net about installing new graphics cards in laptops. Is this something that just isn't done?

you can help it a bit by disabling uneeded services running in the background click here and by stopping uneeded programs from loading at start up click here

also if you go to controlpanel/system/advanced/performance/settings tick the box that says adjust for best performance and this will free up some resourses too.
