Graphics card question

  Darth_chaffinch 14:01 22 Mar 08

I have a Dell 5150 P4, 3Gb RAM, 3GHz, XP currently with a PX6600 GT TDH graphics card, will my machine be able to cope with a 9600GT 512MB GDDR3 card, or a 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 card?? Have the default m.board and PSU. Is it even worth me updating with the Dell I have??

Why are you thinking of upgrading the graphics please?

I reckon your old tech single-core CPU will be quite a considerable bottleneck to the 9600/8800 cards, & will require a more powerful PSU (= more expense).

If your PC has a Dell 350w PSU or better (open case & check this), your best bet may be a 7900GS click here or 7800GTX click here (both £60).

Next best could be a HD 3650 click here (£50, add something for £1 to get free delivery on your order). This is a little better than a 8600GT, but not as good in games as the former two suggested. To get some idea - a 7800GTX & 8600GT compared click here.

Not worth spending more than £60 to upgrade the graphics. G

Also check that the PSU has a spare molex connector.

For the 7800/7900 cards you'll need a 4pin molex to 6pin PCI-E cable adaptor like this click here (not needed for the HD 3650). I couldn't find them on eBuyer, but probably didn't search too well! G

P.S. You may get a 7800/7900 card for less on eBay click here.

Thanks chaps (?)- want to upgrade grpahics to play COD4 etc, my PSU id 350W, think may wait until I have more cash to do a new build (!!). Incidently, do you have any idea how much my Dell would sell for 2nd hand?!?

Yeah, may be a good idea to do a new build.

"Incidently, do you have any idea how much my Dell would sell for 2nd hand?!?" - Probably very little. What's the full spec & does it come with a monitor? G
