My daughter is doing a photography course at college and has been told she will be using CS4. (The college provides a student licensed version). She says that the graphics we have is not suitable -ATI X300. What would be you recommend for a limited budget? The computer is an Acer T180 Sempron processor 3500 150 gig H/D and 1.5 Meg memory. PCI express but I believe it only runs 8x not 16. Should I be looking to replace completely?

I'm not up on graphics card, but you do need one that supports Open GL. Here are the recommended minimum specs. click here

This is the card I use and it works perfectly Nvidia geoforce 8600 GT with 256 mb ram.

Take your pick from the list, you could pick up some of the lower entry cards easily on eBay for under £40. CS4 can be CPU intensive so if your daughter is doing some extreme editing their could be some slow down with your CPU but it should be ok.

Thanks for that list donki. The X300 will be replaced - probably go with a nVidia 9600 which fits my budget.

If an ATI Radeon HD 2400 256MB figures in the list, you can go for a lot lower than a 9600. Also, the Acer T180 is unlikely to have a PSU that's powerful enough to power a card that requires a dedicated PCI-E connector - a 9600 might be one such GPU.

Nvidia specs for the 9600GT click here, with power requirements under the 'Specifications' tab. There appears to be 2 models - 96W & 59W - with the former requiring more power that the latter, in addition to the dedicated 6-pin connector.

Adobe Photoshop click here forum may be the best place to ask which GPU on a budget is likely to be suitable.

Optimize performance of Photoshop CS4 on Windows XP and Vista click here could be useful too. G

You are right crossbow it is only 350 watt and has no available connectors so I'll look at less powerful cards or maybe a new build.

Like the mistake I made, I just got a new PCiExpress 512 PowerColour PCS+ 4850 and it wonna fit into my Antec Solo case.
