Have NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 and son is playing Half Life 2. Am looking at uprating graphics card (to geforce 5200?). Are there any limitations apart from cost over what card I can put on my 2.5 year old machine?

Check if you have AGP 4x or 8x - most 8x work backwards (ie with 4x).

Many cards also need a lot of power - I am not sure of the one you are suggesting, but it should be ok. What is your PSU rating?

Says bus agp 4X. Can I put 8X in place of existing card?

More than likely but it might be worth fining out for sure from someone who know something about graphics cards.

Yes it will just default to x4 there wont be a noticable difference in performance over x8

So not worth uprating mx440 then. Is this what you are saying?

Have recently done same as you, replace gforce440 32mb with a 5200 128m x8

my motherboard is only a x4 but the new card (x8) works fine.

FB Thanks. Now is it worth going for anything more expensive than 5200 or is comp. not up to it?

Small point my card is 64mb

Its all down to your budget 5200 is a basic card at the most for gaming.
If you look at this list of benchmarks then see if you can find the relevant prices for the cards may help
