Google Toolbar Problem

I have a Linux Lite equipped Acer Aspire One which for some reason has just started an annoying problem. Each time I open my browser, Firefox, three tabs open, one of which is Google and it keeps trying to re-install the Google search bar. The install window keeps popping up and I can't seem to get rid of it or stop it from opening. Any tips please?
I thought perhaps I should remove and re-install Firefox but I cannot find any add/remove program facility. Any help appreciated.

Try clicking on Help in FF and then on Check for Updates ...

Check for updates on Firefox is greyed out.
Any suggestions?
