Google suited me as a search engine - Ask has taken over

Somewhere and somehow Ask seem to have staged a coup

Please someone, point me the way to return to Google and preferably remove Ask.

MalwareBytes has found nothing, Spybot found and removed some ads rubbish and though the computer runs smoothly again, Ask remains.

Ask tends to come with Java updates unless you untick the box. It's a pain.

Thank you both for really helpful posts. I have tried and am almost there.

Woolwell thanks for the pointer to being rid of Ask. I suppose it is best to uninstall Java and then re-install watching out for the tick Have several domestic things to do this afternoon but later on !

Uninstalling Java will not get rid of Ask.

You don't have to get rid of Ask; just ensure it is not your default. I do not really want it but I use the free version of Avira anti virus, and this free version needs the ask toolbar (not default browser) to run live surveillance on sites. If you do not use Avira, by all means get rid of Ask.
