good wireless signal but no internet connection

Hello, i am using a Belkin USB wireless connection to access my wireless Modem router.
It works perfectly on my desktop pc but my laptop (XP home) will pick up a signal but not connect to the internet. Unlike my desktop there is no Wireless setup in control panel on the laptop.

Would downloading XP2 and putting it on a disc and onto the laptop sort out this problem?, at the moment Windows (laptop) does not find my wireless connection, although it is there in Belkin utilities and very strong.

Try dropping the security level down to WEP and see if it connects.

security level set to wep - windows does not seem to recognise connection. It wants to dial up? and i have no network or wireless panels in my network even though i am getting perfect signal :)

Just an idea 'cause I had the same problem with a BT router. Try disconnecting the Belkin router power plug and then connect it 10 seconds later. That fixes my problem which still happens occasionally.

Sorry should have made that clearer, it is the main modem router you need to unplug.
