Windows XP Inside Out, by Ed Bott and Carl Siechert (Microsoft Press) is 1250-odd pages but is well-written and very easy to understand, even for novices. It's comprehensive without being too complex. £29 on Amazon for the 2002 revision.

I have used this book to train somebody who has had difficulty in using Win XP, it's easy because there are loads of pictures that exactly match what is on the screen.
