gone up in smoke!

My duaghters machine (a project build about 5 years ago) has suffered an overheated cpu, as far as I can tell, as a result of a cpu fan failure. The cpu, an amd athalon 1ghz, is no more. My task now is to find out if the mobo has met it's end at the same time....so questions.
.I've installed an amd duron 1.4 that I had but whilst I now get a bios screen, as opposed to a "no imput" message, that's all I get. The mobo ia a gigabyte ga-7zxr which only supports up to 1ghz would this explain the stall at the first bios screen?
.If that is the case where can I buy a smaller cpu?
.Or has my mobo gone the same way as the cpu?
anythoughts most welcome

It would probably be as cheap now to get a motherboard bundle and upgrade just look click here at the prices

GA7-ZXR only supports Duron up to 1.3 GHz with a BIOS update. Therefore the motherboard may not be damaged. If you can pick up a 1.1 or 1.2 Duron at a fair, Ebay or similar, it should work.
