Getting MP3 from External HD to Amp

I've been using my Xbox360 and Mediaplayer wireless sharing to play MP3s stored on my External hard Drive through my Hi Fi amp and decent speakers.

The major issue i have with this is having both my PC and 360 on in order to do so a) Fan noise is ridiculous b) Its a PITA having to switch everything on and wiat for them to boot up to play music.

I've been looking at the Squeezebox device ( click here ) you can connect to your network and will plug into the amp to replace the 360 (which causes most of the fan noise) but would still need the PC to be on.

Is there any other way of plugging the Ext HD into the router so that the Squeezebox (or anything similar) would be able to read the files seeing as there is no OS on any of the devices.

Before I launch out and buy a squeezebox, is anyone aware of any problems using this with the bt supplied wireless modem?
