when i plug my external hard drive in it comes upfound new hardware then the wizard searches but takes ages and ages.
is there a driver or something i can download to solve this.

Check the manufacturer's website or search google, if it is taking a very long time it may be that the driver is being installed, but getting stuck, if you are using vista you may find that the drive is incompatible at the moment.

did install after about 10 mins but after reeboot doing the same but been wizard is still looking after 20 mins.
am using xp

What is the make and model of the hard drive

  shauny36 16:37 21 Jul 07

samsung sv 4002h 40 gig.

but i think it does this with a couple of different drives.
is it possible to download a driver that will do all of them.

Have you looked in devices with drive attached, to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks?

  shauny36 16:40 21 Jul 07

yes have done that and everything is ok.

  shauny36 21:38 21 Jul 07

Uninstall the Yellow mark then restart the computer without the Drive connected, after it gets to windows plug the drive in and let it have time to load the Drive icon with green arrow in system tray. Then check Device manager for Yellow icon

sounds like its running at USB1 speed instead of USB2

Refresh USB Ports
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Your equipment should now be recognised.

will give that a go.
uninstalled mass storage but mouse is usb and had trouble reinstalling it (root hub)
