Geforce4 card problem

I have posted this as part of another thread but I didnt get it sorted so I respectfully ask again.
Having managed to install the video card and drivers and disabled the onboard graphics, I ve booted up got the desktop but after a few seconds the monitor powers down. Only comes on again when I reboot. Then goes off again after the desktop.
I have booted up in safe mode and its ok, but of course I cant set the screen res or change from 16 colours in safe mode.
Removed the card and gone back to using onboard card which is fine but I would like to use the separate card.
